Synephrine: is one of the main "active" compounds found in the fruit of a plant called Citrus aurantium. Synephrine is chemically very similar to the ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine found in many over-the-counter cold/allergy medications and in a number of weight-loss and energy supplements which contain Ma Huang; but synephrine differs from ephedrine in that synephrine is considered a semi-selective sympathomimetic (because it targets some tissues such as fat, more than it targets others such as the heart) versus a non-selective sympathomimetic (like ephedra, which targets many tissues equally and thus often causes many side effects). For example, although some high-dose ephedra-containing supplements have been associated with certain cardiovascular side effects such as heart palpitations and even death, researchers at Mercer University in Atlanta have shown that Citrus aurantium extract (because it targets fat tissue rather than heart tissue) has no effect on hemodynamics such as heart rate.
Octopamine: is also an active compound found in the Citrus Aurantium fruit, but in lower quantities than synephine. Octopamine is an endogenous selective beta 3 adrenergic. Coleus Forskohli: is a "power" herb that has an active ingredient in it called forskolin. It has been used in ayruvedic medicine for many years. Forskolin's basic mechanism of action is that it increases the amount of cyclic AMP (adenosine monophosphate) in cells by activating an enzyme called adenylate cyclase. Cyclic AMP (cAMP) is one of the most important secondary messengers in the cell. It is considered to be one of the most important cell-regulating compounds.
